Animal facts



Size.

This bird is bred to be as small as possible, with average weights being between 0.5Kg and 0.7Kg and average length is around 12 inches.


Habitat and Distribution.

This domesticated duck does not have a natural range although it has escaped from collection throughout much of the world, and there are now many populations of this breed in the UK.  It was first introduced to the UK in the 1850s


Age.

These birds have an average life span of around 15 years.


Diet
This duck generally has a domesticated diet, feeding on commercial grain and seed mixes, however where it has been established in the wild it will feed on a variety of seeds and aquatic vegetation.


Groups and Breeding.

This bird is generally a peaceful social bird, which has been bred in to it to aid with its domesticated lifestyle.  Females can produce between 25 to 75 eggs per year.


Threats.

This duck is not threatened and due to its commercial properties, mainly for the pet trade, is bred in steady numbers.

 

Interesting fact's.

This breed was bred to lure wild ducks in to funnel traps in the Netherlands, which it would do with its high pitched call, where it was first bred in the 17th Century.
