Animal facts



Size.

This bird has an average length of around 30cm (12 inches).


Habitat and Distribution.

This bird lives within the forests of Indonesia, where it spends a lot of time along coastal areas.


Age.

These birds have been recorded living between 25 and 35 years.


Diet
This bird feeds largely on small berries in the wild, however also takes the nectar of some of the plants within its range.


Groups and Breeding.

These birds generally live in pairs however can group in flocks of up to 6 birds.  Once these birds have bred, the female will lay 2 eggs which will take 24 to 26 days to hatch.


Threats.

This bird has been evaluated as being vulnerable due to a small population size anyway coupled with habitat loss due to logging, extensive collection in the past for the pet trade, and being hunted in small numbers by locals.

 

Interesting fact's.

Its most common population is now left on the island of Biak which is mostly protected from logging, however it does not supply these birds with the same variety of fruits which they so relish on the mainland.
