Animal facts
Size
This large rabbit breed can weigh from 5Kg to 6.5Kg as animals, with females being slightly larger than males usually.
Habitat and Distribution
This is a domesticated breed which has been selectively bred for its very large size. It does not have a natural distribution.
Age
Giant rabbits generally live for between 4 to 8 years.
Diet
These rabbits will feed on a variety of grasses and other ground covering plants, supplemented with a small amount of vegetables and fruits. Due to this being a domesticated breed most of its diet is usually made up of a mixture of hay and commercial rabbit food.
Groups and Breeding
These rabbits often have litters of around 4 kits, however as many as 12 have been recorded after a gestation of 31 days. As with all rabbit breeds, which this giant variant is a descendant of they benefit greatly from each others company and do best kept in groups.
Threats
This breed is still bred on a large scale and breeders are pushing for even larger sizes, and thus this breeds population number is fairly steady. Its only threat comes from breeder wanting larger sizes and cross breeding to achieve this, threatening its status as a pure breed.
Interesting fact's
This breed is a very common show rabbit where competition amongst breeders is very fierce.
